Meakins/Mersea Week Full Article

Meakins and Mersea Island: Business & Community

The name MEAKINS is probably new to most of you reading this booklet. We are therefore delighted to have been given the opportunity by the Mersea Week Committee to print this and wanted to take this great opportunity to tell you a little more about who we are and what we do - both in terms of business and our involvement in Mersea Island life.

In simple terms, Meakins is a family owned and run business focused on printing, office supplies/stationery and promotional goods. Established in Maldon over 30 years ago, our customers range from Colchester to Chelmsford, Witham, Braintree and the Dengie Peninsula. We have a fierce reputation for customer care, quality and the capacity to work to the tightest of deadlines. To many of our customers we are known as specialists in what we like to call “The Art of the Odd” – identifying solutions wherever they are faced with sourcing bespoke or out of the ordinary requirements. On Mersea Island we are proud to include the likes of Marfleet Construction, The Victory, Art Café, JWB Mersea Ltd and Brennan Group among our customers and would be delighted to have the opportunity to talk to many more of you about how we might add value to your respective businesses.

But, as I said at the top of the page, Meakins is also very much about giving back to the community. Jenny Meakin, the founder of Meakins, has lived on the Island for over 12 years and is an active member of numerous clubs, including Hula Hooping and Belly Dancing, and has participated regularly in performances at the Mersea Food, Drink and Leisure Festival. As Jenny’s partner I have been on the Island 6 years and am a very keen rugby man. Last year I joined Steve Daniels and his band of volunteers in setting up the Juniors (“Foxes”) section of Mersea Island Rugby Club and you will hopefully have begun to notice my regular articles in both Mersea Life Magazine and the Mersea Island Courier on the Club’s behalf. I have taken the role with the “Islanders” for development of the Club’s already generous crop of sponsors and, as a part of both the Juniors and Seniors committees, commit a significant amount of my time each week in that direction. There is a good chance that I have already come knocking on your door for support in terms of pitch side advertising boards – if not then rest assured your time is still to come! In parallel with this relationship Meakins has been very happy to provide a wide range of its services to the Rugby Club, including the pitch side signage and banners at the Glebe, training and first aid equipment and, of course, printing services. It should be said that Meakins has an equally strong relationship with Heybridge Swifts football club as part of its commitment to support of the community there also. It would be great to think that through our involvement this time we might get to meet some of you in the Mersea Island sailing community and begin hopefully, to become even further engaged.

Andrew Meakin (one of Meakins’ two main Directors), along with myself , is also involved in an events and promotions company called ARC Promotions. Through this company we look to stage events such as boxing dinners, golf days, themed nights etc on behalf of local sports clubs and small to medium sized companies. Mersea RFC have recently sampled one such event at Crowne Plaza Five Lakes and, as a result, have asked us through ARC to look at staging a boxing dinner on their behalf at Five Lakes later this year which will raise a considerable amount of money for the Club. We are also looking possibly to stage a Halloween Casino Night – again on behalf of Mersea RFC, but with invitations open to everyone on the Island. If you or an organisation with which you are connected would like to hear more about ARC capabilities please call me at the number below.

Finally Jenny, Andrew, I and all at Meakins would like to thank the Mersea Week Committee for this opportunity to support one of the Island’s major annual calendar fixtures and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable week’s sailing…….

Like the man said……....

“a bad day’s sailing is a helluva lot better than the best day at work.....”

Fight Night II at Five Lakes

On 9th April, Meakins took a table at Fight Night II at the Crowne Plaza Five Lakes Hotel. The evening was jointly sponsored by TEXO Scaffolding of Witham and J.D. Contracts of South Woodham Ferrers, and comprised 12 fights involving amateur boxers from Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk - including 3 County Finals. The event was organised by ARC Promotions and included a three course dinner, live charity auction of sports memorabilia and great raffle for which the top prize was tickets for two at the West End show “The Jersey Boys” plus a night in the 5 star Cumberland Hotel! TEXO Scaffolding’s CEO, Rob Hayward, was sadly unable to attend as he had also secured sponsorship of the Anthony Joshua IBF World Title fight at the 02 on the same night, and it was all the more generous of him therefore to honour his sponsorship of this local event.

The evening was a huge success, with lots of opportunities to network with other businesses, and it was great to see everyone clearly enjoying the night. Lots of money was raised for the two chosen charities for the night - Farleigh Hospice and St John Ambulance - and thanks to further generosity from Rob Hayward the Anthony Joshua fight was screened live in the Crowne Plaza bar. This had the bar full to bursting and was extremely well received by all who managed to squeeze in – just a shame the action was all over in 2 rounds! All in all a great evening’s entertainment and one which Meakins is proud to have been able to support. Plans are already in hand for Fight Night III in October this year and we very much look forward to being there with more Meakins guests.

A strange start to Spring…

Meakins had a strange start to Spring...

Around early February, Colin and Andrew got called to a meeting by Robert Hayward, the owner of TEXO Scaffolding & Construction. Thinking it was to do with ARC Promotions & Events Management's Boxing Event, (the company they started in January with Rob Bowyer) which was being held at Five Lakes on April 9th (check out ARC Promotions Facebook page for more information), they left with their events management hats on.

As TEXO were the main sponsor for the evening, alongside JD Contracts, they were just expecting some details from them. However, there was a huge shock in store, as Mr Hayward broke the news that he was the main Sponsor for the Anthony Joshua World Title Fight at the 02 Arena on the same night! When we reminded Rob of the date, he was a little upset, but being the gentleman that he is, he left his sponsorship money in the ARC Event.

Happily for Meakins, TEXO decided to use us for all their merchandise (T-Shirts & Jumpers) and his vehicle graphics! (Pictures below). Rob Hayward needed someone he could trust to give him the best quality at an affordable price. Under the harsh time constraints, he knew who to call!

Meakins achieved everything required of them, with time to spare and to top everything off, when AJ knocked Martin to the canvas, he only sat down on the end of the TEXO logo!

ARC's event went off fantastically and Rob was even kind enough to pay to have thee AJ fight on in the Crowne Plaza hotel to the delight not only of our boxing guests but the rest of the hotel.

Its not everyday you get to produce for a world title fight, so we were proud to deliver, just like AJ on the night!

Thanks again to Texo's Rob Hayward, and JD Contracts.

Danielle Runs the Marathon

My name is Danielle Meakin, and I am going to run the marathon in April 2016. This is my blog to document all things marathon running and training.

Every year I watch the London Marathon on TV, and I am always inspired to do it. “I can do that!” I think, but never got round to signing up. Until now.

I entered into the ballot prior to the event, with high hopes and excitement running through me, quite literally. Unfortunately I wasn’t successful. Feeling disappointed, deflated and unaccomplished, I thought my dreams of running the marathon were over.

However, after some debate, online research and pure determination, I found out I could run it through a charity! St John’s Ambulance was my choice, and I was so ready.

My training started in April 2015. Before my decision to run the marathon, I enjoyed a leisurely run, and I always kept myself fit. I thought I was relatively healthy and capable of a lengthy run. I quickly found out that wasn’t the case. On my first run with my trainer, I could only run for 20 minutes! To me, for a hopeful marathon runner, that was very disappointing.

Slowly but surely, my stamina and endurance built up, and at this present moment, I can run for a couple of hours and not feel tired. My body has improved so much in such a short space of time!

Training is now going really well, and I am due to run in 92 days. I don’t enjoy the early mornings, however it is a lot easier now than it was when I first started. My average time is a mile in 10 minutes, and I hope to finish the marathon in under 5 hours.

If you wish to sponsor me for the cause that I am running for, the link for my “Just Giving” page is below. Anything you can give is appreciated, and I hope you enjoy my future blogs about my progress!

Fight Night at Five Lakes

Fight Night at Five Lakes

Meakins worked in association with Heybridge Swifts and Canvey Island Boxing Club to bring our customers this fantastic boxing event. Amateur Boxers from all over Essex came and fought for the winning title at Five Lakes. After the rounds there was a sports memorabilia auction hosted by our very own Colin Morgan, and lots of money was raised for Farleigh Hospice. After a good evening of dinner, drinks and lots of fun, everyone moved down into the disco and carried on the evening.

We would like to congratulate all the boxers that won their rounds that evening, and many thanks to Five Lakes for an excellent service. The next boxing evening is scheduled for April 2016, contact us for tickets!
